Summary

At school Connell and Marianne pretend not to know each other。 He's popular and well-adjusted, star of the school football team, while she is lonely, proud, and intensely private。 But when Connell comes to pick his mother up from her job at Marianne's house, a strange and indelible connection grows between the two teenagers--one they are determined to conceal。

A year later, they're both studying at Trinity College in Dublin。 Marianne has found her feet in a new social world while Connell hangs at the sidelines, shy and uncertain。 Throughout their years at university, Marianne and Connell circle one another, straying toward other people and possibilities but always magnetically, irresistibly drawn back together。 And as she veers into self-destruction and he begins to search for meaning elsewhere, each must confront how far they are willing to go to save the other。

Such a good book! One of my favorites- so well written and really tugs on your emotions。 A book with a happy yet melancholy ending。

Isabel

very thought provoking, realistic and sad。 probably why it was not my favorite thing to read。

Ate this book up, I️ read it into the night like a teenager。 It was really good because it invokes strong feelings。

This novel is getting more and more boring in every chapter, it was so tedious and I don't think the author has a purpose, perhaps she just desired to write a novel because she was bored or she assumed that she had to, but I enjoyed her writing style and her SOME realistic parts of her characters, but I never finished this novel。 This novel is getting more and more boring in every chapter, it was so tedious and I don't think the author has a purpose, perhaps she just desired to write a novel because she was bored or she assumed that she had to, but I enjoyed her writing style and her SOME realistic parts of her characters, but I never finished this novel。 。。。more

It's quite safe to say that I am in love with this book。 Sally Rooney does an amazing job in how she depicts the dynamic between Marriane and Connell。 As well as her representation of changing identities, personalities, imposter syndrome and lack of communication and what it entails and emotional vulnerability and the idea of love。 And she unpacks the effect of all these on Marriane and Connell in such a profound yet fundamental way and it spoke to my heart and soul。 I will definitely be coming It's quite safe to say that I am in love with this book。 Sally Rooney does an amazing job in how she depicts the dynamic between Marriane and Connell。 As well as her representation of changing identities, personalities, imposter syndrome and lack of communication and what it entails and emotional vulnerability and the idea of love。 And she unpacks the effect of all these on Marriane and Connell in such a profound yet fundamental way and it spoke to my heart and soul。 I will definitely be coming to this book because it's the kind of novel that will make you feel different emotions or have a different impact on you depending on when you read it。I adore Marriane and Connell's dynamic and how they revolve around each other and impact each other's lives, feelings, relationships, their personalities and how they feel about themselves。 It's truly exquisite because you can't talk about one without the other。 Also, Sally Rooney's writing style is mind blowing because of how intimate and just up close personal it makes me feel with this world she has created。 And the way she had themes of class, money, capitalism, social status and power running in the background was simply a treat, it was done so well and she shows how these different themes yet again affect our characters but not just in a socio-economic way but rather their feelings and relationships。 Like, how does she do that? This book is going to be on my mind forever。 She's a 10。 。。。more

this felt like i was reading a piece of art。 it’s not a book i would normally gravitate towards, but i gave it a shot and it was rlly good。 i mean the book is objectively amazing but not my preferred style or genre。 i also couldn’t get over not having quotations around dialogue。

That ending kind of pissed me off。 But overall a very thought provoking original and beautiful read。

I have a lot of thoughts on this one! It’s such an interesting story and the characters are incredibly quirky and raw。 I think the common themes of insecurity + wasted time are very interesting, and if leaves you with a lot to question and unpack when it’s over。 I’ll be continuing to read reviews and other peoples’ perspectives as I reflect on this one。 A very different read!

another 10/10。。。 wow。 Went through this journey with the both of them, and although its only been two days of me reading this book, it almost felt like I was a part of their lives and they were a part of mine。 Both characters were so relatable, I sometimes found myself thinking "wow, did Sally Rooney take a peek into my brain and somehow managed to form them into complete sentences even if I couldn't myself?"。Absolutely amazing。。。 this is one of the books that makes me wish I could get amnesia s another 10/10。。。 wow。 Went through this journey with the both of them, and although its only been two days of me reading this book, it almost felt like I was a part of their lives and they were a part of mine。 Both characters were so relatable, I sometimes found myself thinking "wow, did Sally Rooney take a peek into my brain and somehow managed to form them into complete sentences even if I couldn't myself?"。Absolutely amazing。。。 this is one of the books that makes me wish I could get amnesia so I could experience it all over again。 。。。more

I accidentally watched the TV adaptation first, not knowing it was a book until I was already pulled in。 But i have to say the two go hand in hand beautifully, telling the same slow, harsh and romantic story。 I love how the book skips across periods of time, showing Connell and Marianne’s ever-changing, yet essentially connective relationship as they grow and change。 Reading/watching this while experiencing a similar kind of growth, and growing closely with someone through an evolving relationsh I accidentally watched the TV adaptation first, not knowing it was a book until I was already pulled in。 But i have to say the two go hand in hand beautifully, telling the same slow, harsh and romantic story。 I love how the book skips across periods of time, showing Connell and Marianne’s ever-changing, yet essentially connective relationship as they grow and change。 Reading/watching this while experiencing a similar kind of growth, and growing closely with someone through an evolving relationship made reading this all the more meaningful。 Connell’s journey as a writer resonates too。 While sometimes painfully drawn out, the story captures how unexpected life is, how you end up one place because of a person, or a set of experiences you never intended to have, but that become part of who you are and lead you to that next stage that may stay unknown until the moment you arrive there。 。。。more

Read again to write in it for Justine。 Good book, but I liked the show better!

I really like the style of Sally Rooneys writing and I enjoyed the emotional journey that this book took me on。 I felt like this book was just a story about time passing by and there wasn’t any significant beginning, middle or end。 I was just informed of the experiences that took place between some random two people (not in a bad way)。 It also made me question several things and I was okay with that。I would recommend this book as a whole。

I have nothing in common with the people who rate this book less than a four。
